Jefre Cantu-Ledesma – Shining Skull Breath LP
2007/2011 vinyl repress
If you're not already familiar with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's solo recordings, chances are you'll have encountered his work in Tarantel, or perhaps come across his consistently outstanding Root Strata label, home to some of the key recordings by artists like Grouper and Machinefabriek. The first piece of music on this latest solo disc is dedicated to Pete Swanson, and fittingly, it sounds every bit as devastating as the magma-flow noise spirals Yellow Swans have been known to turn out. 'Distant Star' makes for an intense five minutes, but 'Cannibal Hymn' allows some recuperation immediately afterwards with a sparkling series of loops slowly dying out over a minute and a half, but soon after you're plunged back into the extremes with the acid bath title track. Actually, have you seen some of these track titles? 'The First Time I Saw Your Face I Thought It Was A Dying Star' might well be the worst chat-up line in the history of the cosmos, but it's also an effortlessly epic piece of viscous, droning melancholy, situated somewhere in the shaded part of a Birchville Cat Motel / Tim Hecker Venn diagram, evoking a deep, sad beauty. The album closes on the whirlpool sustain and soft noise emissions of 'Beautiful Thunderbolt' (Moon Gazing In Your Skull)', which corrupts otherwise tender, muted tones with flecks of noise to great effect. Get one of these while you can - this really is horrifyingly limited and there's literally just a handful left in circulation anywhere. No hanging around on this one...
